Synchronize Your Documents For Backup

In order to facilitate automatic backup of important faculty and staff data, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences uses features in Microsoft Windows called Folder Redirection and Offline Files. This simply redirects the My Documents folder (typically located at C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents) to a "home drive" located on the College's SAN (Storage Area Network) Server.

Additionally, the files stored on the home drive are made available Offline and stored on the local hard drive of a user's computer. This allows users to take their data with them, particularly helpful for laptop users. When logging on or off (or when reconnecting the VU network) Windows Synchronizes any changes between the copy on the server and the copy in the Offline Files Folder.

When you are working offline (disconnected from the SAN server), you will get the following message in the bottom right-hand task bar:

What should be stored in My Documents?

The standard disk space quota for a user's home drive is 1.7 GB. Personal pictures, music and video files should not be stored in My Documents. Please note that the default location for many software programs to store pictures and music is within My Documents- please adjust the settings of the software to default to another location.

Please Note:
  • Microsoft Access or other database files (including Outlook PST Files) cannot be made available offline, and will only be available when connected to the Villanova Network. These files will display error messages at the end of the sync process.
  • A Sync can be manually initiated at any time by right-clicking on My Documents and selecting Synchronize.
  • Home drives are created for Full-time Arts and Sciences Faculty and Staff only.

A more detailed explanation of the process.

The sync process is accomplished through a user Group Policy in the Windows domain (VUAD) which tells your My Documents folder to redirect to your home drive folder (//artscistore.vuad.villanova.edu/users/%username%).

Additionally, the policy tells your windows user profile to make the home drive "available offline", a feature that creates a copy of everything in the home drive/My Documents to an "Offline Files" folder buried within the C drive of the computer (The Offline Files folder cannot simply to be accessed like a typical folder for system and security reasons).

This feature helps the many laptop users to disconnect their computer from the network/take it home and have access to everything in My Documents. When a user reconnects to the campus network, the sync process will quickly scan for new or modified files and automatically copy them up to user's home drive on the server. When a user is connected to the network, they are always working off the server copy. When they logoff or shut down, any new or modified files are copied to the Offline Files folder.

Software to extract all file archive like winzip, winrar, 7-zip, windows installer, etc

Universal Extractor is a program do to exactly what it says: extract files from any type of archive, whether it´s a simple zip file, an installation program, or even a Windows Installer (.msi) package. This is still a work in progress, but so far it´s proven quite useful and I feel others can also benefit from it.

I should stress that Universal Extractor is not intended to be a general purpose archiving software. It will never replace WinRAR, 7-Zip, etc. What it will do is allow you to extract files from virtually any type of archive, regardless of source, compression method, etc.
The original motivation behind this project was that I wanted an easy, convenient way to extract files from installation packages, such as Inno Setup or Windows Installer packages, without pulling up a command line every time. In the process I got a little carried away and ended up throwing in support for every kind of archive format I possibly could find.

Version 1.6 improves on the core functionality of UniExtract, most notably:
  • Full Vista support
  • Individual vs. global preferences (see ChangeLog for details)
  • new Preferences GUI
  • Code execution warnings
It also, of course, includes support for additional formats, as well as the latest versions of support binaries such as 7-Zip.

Reconfigure your Windows 2000 DNS server to forward requests

Takeaway: Get Windows 2000 DNS server to forward requests

You know how DNS is supposed to work: You type in http://www.techproguild.com on your workstation’s browser, your DNS server resolves the name into an IP address, and then your workstation’s browser connects to the page at that address and displays the page. So, after you go to the trouble of setting up Windows 2000, Active Directory, and Windows 2000’s DNS server, why would you be unable to resolve any addresses for resources outside of your local network?

This problem occurs because Windows 2000 can sometimes configure its DNS server to act as a root server. As a root server, the DNS server will only resolve addresses that it contains. In this Daily Feature, I’ll show you why this happens and how to fix it.
Author’s note
In this article, I am only going to focus on making your Windows 2000 DNS server forward requests for addresses that it can’t resolve itself. I’m not going to go into deep detail about what DNS does in general or how to set up a Windows 2000 DNS server. For more information about DNS and Windows 2000, see the Daily Drill Down “Using the Windows 2000 DNS service.”

What’s the problem?
In a Windows 2000 environment, DNS fills two roles. First, Windows 2000’s DNS can provide traditional name resolution for clients on your network that need to access Internet resources. Secondly, Windows 2000’s DNS can provide access to Active Directory and network resources.

When you first install DNS and Active Directory on your network, Windows 2000’s Setup program can cause these two roles to come into conflict with each other. Setup can accidentally configure DNS to resolve Active Directory resources but not allow clients to access Internet-based DNS servers.

When Setup runs, it checks your network for other DNS servers. If it doesn’t find any, Setup assumes that it’s the only DNS server on the planet and sets itself up as a root server. By definition, root servers are authoritative. Basically, they are DNS know-it-alls that don’t require help from other DNS servers.

In a network that’s not connected to the Internet, having your main DNS server configured as a root server isn’t a problem. Because there aren’t any external addresses to worry about, the root server indeed knows all there is to know about addresses on your network. However, things become complicated when you finally connect your network to the Internet. At that point, your internal DNS server can’t know the address for every Internet resource, so it requires help from external DNS servers.

If Setup has configured your DNS server as a root server, the DNS server won’t look for help from external DNS servers. As a matter of fact, if you try to configure forwarders or root hints on a Windows 2000 DNS root server, it will outright refuse to accept the information.

Tearing it out by the root
So what do you do to allow your internal Windows 2000 DNS server to forward queries for addresses it doesn’t contain to other DNS servers? Fortunately, you can manually administer an attitude adjustment to your DNS server to make it realize that there are other DNS servers it should refer to, essentially removing the DNS server’s root server configuration.

To do so, click Start | Programs | Administrative Tools | DNS. This will start the DNS Management Console. Expand DNS Server object in the left pane. Expand the Forward Lookup Zones folder. Select the zone folder that is marked with a period (.), right click it, and select Delete.

If you’re using Active Directory Integrated Zones, the DNS MMC will display a dialog box informing you that when you delete the zone, the MMC will also delete the zone from Active Directory and any DNS server that references Active Directory. Click Yes to remove the zone from both Active Directory and the DNS server.

Setting up forwarders
After you restart your Windows server, you can then configure DNS to forward to other DNS servers. To do so, start the DNS MMC, right-click your DNS server, and select Properties. When the Properties window for the server appears, click the Forwarders tab. Select the Enable Forwarders check box.

If this check box is grayed out, then your DNS server is still configured as a root server. Recheck to make sure you’ve selected the proper DNS server and that you properly removed the root zone folder as mentioned above.

After you select the Enable Forwarders check box, enter the DNS servers you want to forward to in the IP address field. You’ll need to enter the IP address of each server one at a time, clicking Add after each one. When you have finished, click OK.

Going forward
Once you remove the DNS server’s root capability and configure forwarders on your DNS server, your workstations will be able to access both internal and external network resources. You can also save yourself the headache of entering multiple DNS addresses on client workstations. Just direct client requests to your Windows 2000 DNS server, and it will handle the requests as it sees fit.

Antivirus 2008 is classified as Rogue Anti-Spyware. After infecting a user’s system, it proceeds to scare its victim into buying the “product” by displaying fake security messages, stating that your computer is infected with spyware and only Antivirus 2008 can help you to remove it after you download the trial version. As soon as the victim downloads Antivirus 2008 trial version, it pretends to scan your computer and shows a grossly exaggerated amount of non-existent errors. Then, Antivirus 2008 offers to buy the full version to fix these false errors. If the user agrees, Antivirus 2008 not only does not fix the errors, but it takes the user’s money and may even install additional spyware into the victim’s computer.

Some Rogue Anti-Spyware, such as Antivirus 2008, may offer users to buy it after the victim clicks on a banner or a pop-up while surfing the internet. Usually, a Trojan is installed to a victim’s computer after clicking on the advertisement. It then proceeds to download or even install Antivirus 2008, which is another way for Rogue Anti-Spyware to spread itself.

Most of rogue Anti-Spyware, such as Antivirus 2008, is nearly impossible to remove manually.
