Minor complications of pregnancy

Pregnancy wreaks havoc on the female body.

As well as pluses such as thick hair and a 'blooming' complexion, it pushes organs out of place and floods the body with hormones.

Discomfort from having your stomach in your chest and other organs in unaccustomed places does not usually occur until the final stages of pregnancy when the baby is bigger, but hormonal changes may be evident from the first moment, causing sudden mood swings and making the victim feel as if she is on an emotional rollercoaster.

Many of the minor problems of pregnancy can be lessened through healthy eating - five portions of fruit and vegetables a day - and exercise and many are the first signs that a woman is pregnant.

They include:
  • feeling sick or going off food that the woman previously enjoyed
  • a metallic taste in the mouth
  • constipation
  • fatigue
  • tender, larger breasts
Many of these last the whole pregnancy and are accompanied by other problems.

Few women escape at least one of the following:

Morning sickness:

Many theories exist as to why some women suffer terribly from morning sickness and others appear to escape unscathed, but a major factor is likely to be the body reacting to hormonal changes.

The condition, which can range from feelings of nausea to continuous vomiting, can occur at any time of the day or all through the day.

For some women it lasts throughout the pregnancy, but for most who have it usually fades after the third month.

Stress and diet, particularly fatty or spicy food, are thought to play a part.

Many women fear that, if they cannot eat because of sickness, they will harm the foetus, but research shows this to be unfounded.

The person who suffers is the mother.

As one doctor put it: "The baby will survive."

However, the condition may be offset by eating small amounts regularly, drinking lots of fluids, resting exercising and avoiding foods that make the woman feel nauseous.

Doctors recommend that women who suffer from morning sickness have something to drink, such as sweet tea, and some dry toast before getting up.

If a woman cannot keep any food down, she should consult her GP.

Constipation and haemorrhoids:

The bowel absorbs more fluid during pregnancy and food moves slower down the intestines.

This can lead to constipation which can in turn trigger haemorrhoids - protrusions from the anus which bleed and can be painful and itchy.

Pregnancy hormones which relax the veins may also contribute to haemorrhoids.

Women who have to take additional iron may find that this worsens the problem.

Pregnant women with constipation are discouraged from taking laxatives.

Instead doctors recommend eating lots of fruit and vegetables, exercising regularly, avoiding standing still for long periods and drinking plenty of fluids.

There are also creams and suppositories on the market which lessen the irritation caused by haemorrhoids.

They can also be pushed back into the anus with lubricating jelly.

Most clear up soon after the birth of the baby.

Varicose veins:

These are another consequence of hormonal changes which relax the veins, slowing blood flow.

They can be painful and itch and occur in the legs and vaginal area.

Usually the ones in the vaginal area disappear after birth, but those in the legs may not totally vanish.

Some women appear to have a genetic disposition towards varicose veins.

The following can lessen the problem:
  • regular exercise
  • avoid long periods standing still, sitting with crossed legs and wearing tight-fitting underwear
  • sit and sleep with your feet up
  • avoid excessive weight gain during pregnancy
  • use ice packs
Cramp:

Cramp - sudden muscle spasms - is thought to affect up to half of all pregnant women.

It mostly occurs at night and can be extremely painful.

Many theories exist as to the cause, including mineral deficiencies and poor circulation, but none has been totally proved.

Massaging the affected area - often the feet - can help, as can flexing the foot and regular exercise.

Indigestion and heartburn:

Indigestion can be due to hormonal changes in the early stages of pregnancy.

In the later months, it is likely to be a result of the foetus pushing the stomach upwards.

It can be avoided by eating little and often, instead of big meals, avoiding fatty and spicy food and sitting up straight when eating.

Heartburn is more painful than indigestion and is the result of the relaxation of muscles at the stomach opening.

This causes excess acid in the stomach.

It is most likely to occur when lying flat so doctors recommend sleeping with feet propped up and avoiding food for two or three hours before going to bed.

Pregnant women should consult their GP, midwife or chemist before taking any indigestion remedies as they could affect the foetus.

Backache:

Ligaments become looser during pregnancy in preparation for labour, but this can put more pressure on the lower back and pelvis, causing backache.

This is likely to increase in the later stages of pregnancy as the foetus gets heavier.

This can be lessened by avoiding lifting heavy objects, keeping the back straight when lifting objects, wearing flat shoes and sitting with the back well supported.

Exercises which involve arching the back can also help.

Other common problems of pregnancy include

  • faintness (due to poor blood circulation to the brain)
  • needing to urinate often (caused by the baby pressing on the bladder)
  • bleeding gums (due to hormonal changes)
  • stretch marks, swollen ankles, fingers and feet (due to water retention)
  • vaginal discharge (usually clear and white, but it can be itchy if there is an infection, this is most likely to be thrush)
  • headaches
Women who suffer from severe headaches should consult their GP as this could be a result of high blood pressure.

Learning From Ants

Observing Ants

When you live in the city you take any nature you can get. I may not be able to walk out the front door to take my kids on a nature walk through the woods, but we can go out on the sidewalk and look at ants. And you’d be surprised how much fun that can be. In the book I Love Dirt (Trumpeter, 2008), author Jennifer Ward dishes the dirt on ants, here’s her advice on how to have a nature lesson whether you walking down the city sidewalk or enjoying a rural picnic.

Probably one of the easiest insects to watch in action is the ant, and what antics they perform as they go about their very busy workdays. Ants can be found in practically any outdoor environment–from sidewalks to playgrounds, from a small patch of grass to a large field.

Scientists who study bugs are called entomologists. A true bug is an animal that has a mouth part that can pierce and suck, like a mosquito or a ladybug. Ants are not true bugs, even though they have mouths and are in constant search for food. They are part of the insect family. Insects have three main body parts: A head, a thorax, and an abdomen. Insects also have six legs.

Take your budding entomologist outside and locate an anthill. (Warning: All ants can bite, ans their bites can hurt! Do not hold or handle ants of any size.) Spend time watching them in action. Follow their trail and see where it leads you.

Ants follow a trail because they are searching for food. When one ant finds food, it leaves a scent trail for the other ants in the colony to follow, telling them where they can find the food supply. When you see ants following a trail, it means they are off to get provisions for the colony.

Try this fun experiment to watch how ants communicate with one another by leaving a scent trail. Collect several small twigs and place them them end to end to create an enclosed space not too far from an anthill. Don’t create a high enclosure; make it flat and wide. Drop some sugar or cracker crumbs within the enclosed space.

Wait for the ants to discover your gift. Soon they will find the food you’ve left for them, and as they take it away, they will leave a scent trail so they can return for more. Other ants in the colony will quickly catch the trail’s scent and follow it to the food source too. Once you have a trail of ants in pursuit of the food, carefully remove the sticks. Observe what happens: The ants become confused because their scent trail has been removed.

Question: How do ants smell? Do they have noses?
Answer: Ants use their antennae–the two long, thin body parts on their heads–to smell with.

Coffee 'worsens poor fertility'

Drinking too much coffee can lower the odds of a woman with fertility problems getting pregnant, a study suggests.

Dutch researchers followed 9,000 women who had received IVF to see if they fell pregnant naturally.

Around one in seven did, but drinking more than four cups of coffee a day cut chances of conceiving by around 26%.

Experts said the findings, presented to a European conference, only applied to women with poor fertility who wanted to maximise their chances of pregnancy.

The researchers, from Radboud University in Nijmegan, studied all women who had received IVF treatment in the Netherlands between 1985 and 1995.

They found 16% of the women went on to conceive naturally, 45% within six months of their last IVF treatment.

They used questionnaires to analyse how lifestyle factors affected a woman's chances of pregnancy.

Drinking alcohol at least three times a week carried the same risk as excessive caffeine intake.

But smoking more than one cigarette a day and being overweight reduced the chances of pregnancy even more.

The researchers estimated that a 36-year-old woman who smoked, drank too much coffee and alcohol and was overweight, and who had been through three cycles of IVF, would have a 5% chance of a natural pregnancy.

If she was a healthy weight and did not smoke or have too much caffeine or alcohol, her chance would be 15%.

'Limitations'

Dr Bea Linsten, who led the research, told the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology conference in Barcelona that patients should be advised how they can maximise their chances of a natural pregnancy.

"We have to remind our patients that they may influence their chance of spontaneous pregnancy after IVF with a healthy lifestyle."

However, some experts warned that the findings of the study had to be examined with caution.

Fiona Ford, of the Centre for Pregnancy Nutrition, said: "Whilst the results of this study are interesting, there are evidently limitations to these findings as post IVF patients are a selective group who have already experienced problems with conception.

"There is nothing within this study that provides a reason to change guidance to patients."

She cited previous reseach which said there was no "convincing support" for the claim that coffee was linked to delayed conception.

Fertility expert Professor Bill Ledger, from the University of Sheffield, said caffeine could potentially have a mild, but toxic, effect on ovaries and sperm which could be a problem for those with poor fertility.

But he added: "A lot of women can have 20 cups of coffee a day and get pregnant while falling off a log, but if you're already subfertile it could push you over the edge.

"It is only a problem if you are subfertile and you overdose."

Zoe Wheeldon, from the British Coffee Association, said: "There is no need to cut caffeine or coffee out of the diet completely, scientific evidence demonstrates that for pregnant women or those trying to conceive up to 300mg of caffeine per day is perfectly safe."

Red Button That Save 3000 Men

Sister Li and the Earthquake

In the early 1950s as persecution swept through the Chinese church, a pastor named Li lived in Guangdong Province in southern China. Li had a wife and five children, aged from twelve to a newborn baby. The authorities arrested Li for ‘counter revolutionary’ activities, and sentenced him to prison with hard labor in an iron mine in remote northeast China.

Li was ordered to take a train more than 2,000 miles to Heilongjiang Province, where he was to begin his sentence of many years. Li’s wife was understandably devastated. She had five children to take care of including a newborn, and now their only source of income was taken from them. They had nowhere to turn except the Lord. The Lis decided they should travel with their father all the way to Heilongjiang, hoping they would be allowed to visit him in the prison from time to time, and if a miracle happened and he was released early they would be near him. They sold most of their possessions and made enough money to purchase seven train tickets for what in those days was a week-long train journey. During the trip their hearts were heavy. Pastor Li prayed for his beloved wife and children, exhorting them to follow the Lord at all costs and praying earnestly for them, hoping to somehow compensate in a short period of time for what would be years of silence to follow.

The Li family finally arrived at their destination. Many tears flowed as Pastor Li entered the prison. His destitute family found some wooden planks and bits of canvas, and constructed a makeshift hut on the side of the road not far from the labor camp. The icy winds and winter temperatures of minus 20° cut like knives through the hut and thin clothes of the abandoned family. The children cried night after night, especially the newborn baby who could not get enough nourishment or warmth. Their existence was so miserable that words cannot adequately describe the inner and outer pain this family went through – all because they loved and served the Lord Jesus Christ.

Life inside the labor camp for Pastor Li was intolerable. He and the other prisoners were forced to work 14 hours per day, seven days a week. The backbreaking work of hauling heavy loads like a pack animal, coupled with the putrid and meagre food rations, quickly caused his health to deteriorate. The worst pressure of all for Pastor Li was the knowledge that his beloved family were suffering in freezing conditions just outside the prison gates. Three months after entering the prison, Pastor Li died.

When the news was passed on to Mrs Li and her children, all hope was lost. The family plunged into deep depression and despondency. Mrs Li could see no way out, and longed to die. The children were miserable beyond words. Mrs Li told them she would have to find a job in order for them to survive. Her eldest child, a daughter aged twelve, said, “No mama, you cannot work. Our little brother needs you. He cries all day for you and there is no-one else to help him. I will go and look for a job.” The little girl entered the prison office and requested to see the director. She said, “My father was put in this God-forsaken place because of his love for Jesus Christ. That is the only crime he ever committed. He was a good man who loved and helped people. Now he is dead. We have nothing. We have no money, no place to live, and no food. We cannot even return to our home in the south. I want to know if there is any job at all in this prison that you can give me.”

The prison director knew about Pastor Li’s death and, realizing that his little orphaned daughter was now speaking with him, a slight tinge of compassion welled up in his heart. He told her, “I have a job, but it is not interesting and pays very little.” She exclaimed, “I will take it!”

The prison director took her outside to an area above where 3,000 prisoners worked below the ground in an iron mine. He said, “Do you see this red button? Your job is to stand next to this pole all day, every day, and when someone tells you to push it, you must push it straight away. This button is the emergency button and when it is pushed a siren is triggered deep below the ground that makes the men evacuate as fast as they can. This button should never be pushed by accident, or without us telling you to push it.” For day after day, week after week, young Sister Li stood next to the pole with the red button. When she received her first pay—just a few dollars—she and her family were overjoyed.

One afternoon, as she was standing next to the pole, she suddenly heard a voice say, “Push the button!” She spun around to find no-one near her, and was confused. A few moments later she heard the same voice again, this time louder: “Quick! Push the button now!” Sister Li again turned but saw no-one. She thought she was losing her mind and just stood there confused. She couldn’t push the button unless there was a major emergency, and nothing looked any different from normal. A few seconds later she heard the voice for the third time, but on this occasion it was with great authority: “Sister Li, push the button now!”

This time she realized it was no less than the voice of the Lord that had been speaking to her. She didn’t understand why He was telling her to push the button but she knew she had to obey. She immediately pushed the red button and the emergency alarm sounded deep underground.

Three thousand men emerged to the surface as quickly as they could, confused and eager to learn what emergency had taken place. The prison director came running from his office and demanded to know why Sister Li had pushed the button and brought production to a halt. Then, just moments after the last man had evacuated from the mine, the ground started to shake violently. A strong earthquake struck that lasted for about 20 seconds, completely collapsing the mine to such an extent that nobody has been able to enter again to this day. When the shaking stopped an eerie silence came upon the gathered mass. Every eye was fixed upon the tiny frail figure, still standing next to the pole and the red button she had so jealously guarded.

The terrified prison director asked in a stammering voice, “Comrade Li, how…how did you know that you should push the button when you did?” She was given a fruit-box to stand on so that she could be seen just above the heads of the gathered men. In the loudest voice she could muster she said, “It is the Lord Jesus Christ who told me to push the red button. He told me to do it three times and finally I did. Jesus Christ is the only way for you to know the true and living God. He loves you, as seen by the fact he saved all your lives this day. You need to repent of your sins and give your lives to him!”

Immediately all three thousand men, including the prison director, knelt down and prayed with great sobs, asking Jesus to come and forgive them and live in their hearts.

Warning For All File-Sharers

Virgin Media has sent about 800 letters to customers warning them that they should not be downloading illegal music files via file-sharing sites.

It is part of a 10-week campaign it is running in conjunction with the BPI to "educate" users about downloads.

The BPI, the body which represents the UK record industry, told the BBC that "thousands more letters" would be sent.

Its stricter stance on illegal downloaders might result in some ISPs being taken to court, it told BBC News.

Refuseniks

The BPI wants all UK ISPs to sign up to a so-called three strikes policy - where users of file sharing networks get two warnings and are then disconnected if they are sharing copyright files.
So far only Virgin Media has officially signed up and it is keen to stress that currently it is running an education-only campaign and that no-one has been thrown off the network.

Virgin said the wording on the envelope which contains the warning letter sent to 800 customers - which threatens consumers with disconnection - was a "mistake".

This would be reviewed in mid-August, said a Virgin Media spokesman.

BPI chief executive Geoff Taylor told BBC News that the body was prepared to back up the education campaign with legal action, including taking ISPs to court.

"If we have to go to court, we will go to court and we will win," he said.

One customer who received a letter told BBC Radio 1's Newsbeat programme that he was unhappy with Virgin Media.

Will McGree received a letter in June, warning him that legal action could be taken against him.

He said: "It's doomed to fail. Virgin Media will lose a lot of customers over this because people don't like to be accused of stealing music over their morning coffee.

"It made me feel betrayed. I was under the impression that I paid Virgin Media money to keep my internet connection protected and safe."

He said no-one in his flat had been file-sharing and that it was possible someone had accessed his wireless network from outside the building.

Becky Hogge, executive director of the Open Rights Group, said the letters were a disproportionate response from the music industry.

"We need to protect users from punitive measures," she said.

She said the music industry had to be in a position of offering a viable alternative before it clamped down on the activities of some users.

"Stopping illicit file-sharing might not be as effective a measure as trying to monetise it," she said.

Some ISPs such as Carphone Warehouse, have refused to participate and the BPI did not rule out the possibility of taking such refuseniks to court.

Others, such as BT, have sent letters to subscribers threatening them with disconnection although it said this is not a new policy.

"We have not joined any "crusades", the telco said in a statement.

"We do work with various bodies to help them protect their copyright material and will sometimes pass on warning notices to customers on their behalf where we feel this is appropriate.

If a customer continues to be in breach of our terms and conditions then BT has the right to suspend or terminate that customer's account, though we work closely with customers to avoid this where possible," the statement read.

The industry has been given until spring of next year to find a solution to illegal downloaders or face legislation.

Youth-skewed

The current system involves the BPI policing file sharing networks. It looks for illegal traffic and identifies the IP address from which it has come and informs the ISP.

There is no distinction made between someone who has downloaded one illegal track and someone who has downloaded thousands.

A joint letter from Virgin and the BPI is then sent to the individual.

"This is about education. We make no assumptions about who is at fault. It may be someone in the family or someone illegally using their wi-fi connection," said a Virgin Media spokesman.

With conservative estimates suggesting a fifth of Europeans are involved in file sharing, some experts question how much impact such a system can have.

"File sharing is very youth-skewed. The BPI isn't going to close the door on the problem but it can get at the families whose kids are file sharing without their knowledge," said Mark Mulligan, an analyst with Jupiter Research.

Virgin is keen to stress that the 800 or so letters it has so far sent are a drop in the ocean compared to its 3.8m user base.

"In the scheme of things that is a relatively small number," said Ian Fogg, analyst with Jupiter Research.

He said that ISPs faced a difficult balancing act between conforming to the BPI's new rules and pleasing their own customers.

"It is a sensitive issue for providers. File sharers are using up network capacity and therefore pushing up their costs and illegal downloads compete with their own music services," he said.

"They need to be seen to be doing enough so they don't get sued and to control their costs but also need to be careful not to upset their customers."

Three strikes and you're in

The record industry has long grappled with how to wrest back control of digital music.

According to Jupiter Research, a fifth of Europeans use file sharing networks. Paid-for digital music services such as iTunes are used by just 10% and make up just 8% of overall music revenue.

The BPI admitted that the current mechanisms for selling music were "broken".

The new strategy will see it negotiating licensed content deals with ISPs who have pursued file sharers.

"We want people to see this not as three strikes and you're out but three strikes and you're in to legitimate music services," said Frederico Bolza, head of strategy at SonyBMG.

Some DRM-free material may be made available and the new subscription models will allow users to keep some of the tunes they download, he said.

Geoff Taylor, chief executive of the BPI, said the details of the services were yet to be decided but that there are likely to a variety of models on offer that would be "easy and cheap".

The form they take will be crucial, thinks Mr Mulligan.

"Charging a tenner a month hasn't worked. Ideally it needs to be incredibly cheap or free, with a massive catalogue that can be transferrable," he said.

Mr Taylor admitted that the BPI's current campaign was unlikely to stop file sharing completely but he did think the idea that the web was home to free stuff needs to be challenged.

"There is a phenomenal amount of piracy out there and we believe that the idea that 95% of content on the net is free is not sustainable. We don't believe that society can allow the free consumption of content to persist," he said.

The List of Living

It starts out small-ankle-high. But as you walk along the brick sidewalk, the wall grows higher and higher, listing more and more names. Somewhere along the path the significance of the list becomes overwhelming when you realize that the Vietnam Veterans Memorial bears the names of nearly 50,000 young Americans who died in that conflict more than 20 years ago.

Other lists include the 34,000 GIs who died in Korea and the nearly 300,000 who lost their lives during World War IL The other countries involved in those conflicts also have their lists of people whose dreams and hopes died with them in battle.

It is appropriate to remember those who gave their lives in defense of freedom. But more importantly, we need to think about a list that gives meaning to life-and death. It's a list that God keeps. It's not a register of the dead but a list of the eternal living called the Book of Life.

Is your name listed there:' Do you believe that Jesus Christ died for you and then rose from the grave? Have you put your faith in Him, ensuring that you will spend eternity in God's presence? It's the only true hope we have in a world where death is inevitable. -- JDs

Is my name written there
On the page white and fair?
In the book of Thy Kingdom
Is my name written there ?

Through The Roof

I heard about a man who, in a rousing service, prayed. "Lord, come down through the roof. I'll pay for the shingles." When I was a boy, I liked that story because I wished that the church services I attended could have been more exciting.

As I grew older, however, I began to realize that genuine Pentecostal power produces something deeper than mere excitement Great things happened on that unique Sunday described in today's Scripture reading because the disciples were "tilled with the Holy Spirit." God desires that all Christians be filled with the Spirit. It's not an option. It should be the norm for every member of Christ's body.

In Ephesians 5:18, Paul said, "Do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit."We experience this when we acknowledge our need of His presence in our lives, choose to obey God's Word, and continually depend on Him. When He takes control, the result will be that we speak encouragement to one another. We will have a song in our hearts, give thanks for all things, and submit to one another (vv.18-21). That kind of Pentecostal power can revitalize church services and transform lives. -HVL

O Breath of life, come sweeping through us,
Revice Thy Church with life and power;
O Breath of life, come, cleanse, renew us,
And fit Thy church to meet this hour

Which one do you choose? White Chocolate or Brown Chocolate?

Apart from chocolate was brown, was known also to be brown was white. The person often more chose this white chocolate with the content view of his fat was lower than coloured chocolate. Don't be wrong. White chocolate did not contain seed solid matter cocoa (cocoa butter) that was mixt with milk solid matter and sugar. This cocoa butter was very bored, meaning that containing high cholesterol. Precisely chocolate was brown was very good for the health, moreover that the content his cocoa exceeded 60 percent. Because, apart from containing several important nutrients like magnesium, calcium, potassium, iron, vitamin B, D, and E, also contained the compound flavonoid that helped prevented the disturbance of the heart of the coroner and the growth of cancer cells. Moreover according to the research, the content of magnesium to chocolate could improve mood the woman around and for menstruation.

No Comparison

A employee in the bill collection department of a large store gave me an insight into human nature. He told me that over and over he gets a similar response from customers who are delinquent in paying their bills. They argue, "I know you must have others who owe a lot more than I do. Get off my back, will you!"

The employee then told me, "They miss the point entirely. Sure, there are a lot of others who owe more. But somehow I have to tell them in a nice way, `Look, what somebody else owes isn't the issue. Our records say that your account is overdue! "'

The tendency of sinful man has always been to shift attention from himself by pointing the finger at others. Religious people excuse their inconsistencies by referring to the "pagans" around them. And the "pagans" try to sidestep the issue by talking about the hypocrisies of the religious. But God is not fooled by finger-pointers.

When someone else appears to be a greater sinner than we are, it's just an illusion. The sooner we realize that no one owes more to God than we do, the more likely we are to receive His free forgiveness. He extends His pardon only to those who humbly acknowledge that they are hopelessly in debt. MRD 11

My sin, O Lord, defies Your Word,
It scrons Your holy name;
I will nor make excuse for wrong
Christ's blood is all i claim

The North Pole without Ice

The rise in the temperature in the Arctic region, the North Pole, caused the liquefaction of increasingly fast ice and spread. For the first time in the history, the North Pole territory possibly without ice in the hot season this year.

"We predicted this year the North Pole region possibly free from ice for the first time," said David Barber, the researcher from the Manitoba University, that was carrying out the expedition by the Canadian ice-breaker, CCGS Amundsen. The Barber opinion was support by direct observation and the satellite image. The data shows, most ice there was the young layer that aged less than a year. This layer was formed for the length of the cold season.

Young ice very fragile and risky melting in the hot season higher than eternal ice that was formed since for years. The rise in the risky also temperature diluted the layer of ice that was thicker although having the opportunity of remaining in the hot season this year.

This estimate was faster than the prediction uptil now. To the climate model beforehand, the Arctic ice region it was predicted just was free ice for the first time in the year 2013-2030. This matter showed the global warming threat came faster. "We lost 65 percent layer" of "ice in the north crack in a year," said the barber. The record of the liquefaction that was felt last year, according to the scientists, as a result of the combination of the warm flow, the dry wind, and the intense sun rays. The damaging combination not necessarily happened this year, but his impact has begin to be seen.

The region that melted in fact immediately was again closed the layer of ice because of the cold season that also the extreme. However, the layer of ice that was formed too thin so as susceptible broke and melted.

Fly With Eagles

A well-known business leader commented on the winners and, the losers in his field. "The winners fly with eagles." he said, "and the losers run with turkeys."

When Jesus selected the small group to whom He entrusted His mission in the world, the men appeared to be anything but "eagles." Yet Jesus knew that by His power and grace then could soar. But He had to teach them to fly together.

What a strange mix! There was Peter, impetuous and uncouth. And Andrew, simple and believing. Thomas had a question mark for a mind. Matthew probably held his post as tax collector by cooperating with the Romans. And Simon. a Zealot. may have belonged to a guerrilla band determined to disrupt Roman trade or to riot in the streets to make life miserable for the foreign overlords. Think of it-one from the political right, the other from the left. It would he a little like having a lawyer for the ACLU and an organizer for the John Birch Society on the same church board.

Why this diversity? Perhaps to teach us that loyalty to Jesus comes first. Discipleship, true to its name. requires us to learn love and obedience and submission in a diverse community of faith under one Head-Jesus Christ. -- HWR
