First Seizure of Cigarettes

Cartons of cigarettes seized by customs officers from the alleged smugglers

Seven customs officials foiled an attempt to smuggle 128 cartons of cigarettes as well as two cans of Tiger Beer yesterday.

It was believed to be the first attempt to smuggle cigarettes foiled by customs officials following the announcement of the cigarette price hike.

The cigarettes confiscated were of various brands.

Officials from the Royal Customs and Excise stopped a car bringing in the cigarettes after a public tip-off in the Jln Junjongan area.

Four locals - a man and three women - were allegedly involved in the smuggling attempt.

All of the smuggled goods were issued the 'Notice of Seizure', while the suspects face charges under Chapter 146 of the Excise Order 2006.

The Department of Royal Customs and Excise urged members of the public to continue their vigilance against smuggling and report any suspicious activities to the department through its hotline 8714422 or 2382422 or email at info@customs.mof.gov.bn. - Borneo Bulletin
