Elephants

Elephants are pachyderms that also include the rhinoceros and hippopotamus; the word pachyderm means “thick skinned”. There are arguments as to who are the closes relatives of the elephants and among them the manatees and the hyraxes are listed. Who are really these animals that have amazed, entertained and decimated because of their ivory. By the way, the word elephant is derived from the Greek word for ivory.

Are they really thick skinned? It does not appear so since they tend to cover the skin with dirt or mud for protection from insects and the heat of the sun. And this leads me to ask what the color of an elephant is? It is easy; it is mainly that of the soil that they are in. As you can see from the various images in this blog, they are gray which I think is their prime color and the yellows, blacks or reds are just those of the soil that they use as make-up.

These animals are the most interesting I have encountered and their interrelationships are governed by a matriarchal society fully focused in the raising and protection of the young. What wonderful childhood it would be if I would have been raised by elephants…constant attention, no day care centers, not having to go to kindergarten, and free to wonder around.

The proboscis is the definite anatomical structure of the elephant. No other animal has such a wonderful tool that works as a nose, hand, snorkel, signaling flag, weapon, water hose, hugging and hand shaking device. It will take too long for me to elaborate in the various tasks that the proboscis is used for I must mention to what I refer by signaling flag.

The elephants can communicate their state of mind by the position of their proboscis; if you get to close they will raise and lower it giving you a warning to keep your distance, at times they want to get close, the proboscis relaxed and dragging the ground, or they just stand there watching you with the proboscis resting in one of their tusk, which reminds me or Rodin’s statue of the Thinker.

Since I mentioned “Thinker”, this implies intelligence as expresses by their care of the young, defense of the herd, social stratification, inter/intra species communication, grief when faced with death, playing, recognition and greeting of siblings, etc. Are they intelligent? I say they are…and probably due to their proboscis as ours are due to our hands.

Is Your Home Hurting You?

Natural Solutions

It’s not easy to know if your home sweet home could be making you sick, because symptoms of environmental illness (a long list that can include irritation of the eyes, throat, skin, and nasal passages, as well as headaches and fatigue) can have many causes. But your house may indeed be the culprit if you notice you consistently feel better outside than indoors, or you start feeling lousy after: moving into a new home; remodeling your current one; bringing in a new piece of furniture; or using a new product.

When 50-year-old architect Paula Baker-Laporte comes home, she pulls off her shoes and enters an airy refuge. Sinking into a window seat, she basks in the New Mexico light that dances across exposed timber frames. She rests her eyes on the greenery of an indoor garden and unwinds as the scent of the evening drifts in.

Life wasn’t always this bucolic. Ten years ago something was wrong, and Baker-Laporte knew it wasn’t just in her head. She felt sapped and exhausted most of the time. She suffered from a chronic cough, recurrent bronchitis, and digestive disorders. Her home offered no respite, and every time she went out on a job–whether to a remodeling project or a house under construction–she felt even worse.

Baker-Laporte’s friend and doctor, Erica Elliott, was stumped. Then, oddly enough, Elliott herself began experiencing similar symptoms. A mountaineer and marathon runner accustomed to vigorous good health, she began feeling increasingly fatigued, compounded by a flu-like malaise that flared up monthly like clockwork.

With the help of a colleague trained in environmental medicine, Elliott traced her own illness to what seemed an unlikely source: the very air she breathed. Whenever the wind shifted outdoors, toxic fumes from the heavy-duty cleaning products used at her medical clinic wafted into her work area; the building’s exhaust was right next to the air intake vent. To add insult to injury, every four weeks a pesticide company sprayed the office baseboards with the neurotoxin Dursban.

As Elliott became more familiar with chemical exposure and its symptoms, she suggested that Baker-Laporte, too, take a close look at her surroundings. Sure enough, the architect soon learned that in the course of her workdays, she was regularly breathing in formaldehyde, a fungicide and component in glues, as well as other airborne compounds that drifted out from new cabinetry, paints, drywall, plywood, and carpets. At last they had a diagnosis: Both doctor and patient were suffering from environmental poisoning. Instead of providing environments that fostered health, Elliott’s clinic and Baker-Laporte’s homes were making them sick.

It was a rude awakening for both. In fact, Baker-Laporte thought she might even have to give up her career. To make matters worse, she was already in the midst of building a home for Elliott. The doctor told Baker-Laporte that they would simply have to change their plans: The Dursban at the office had made her sensitive to all kinds of chemicals, including those commonly found in homes and used in construction materials. “I told her she couldn’t design a regular house, because I couldn’t live in it,” Elliott says.

But instead of giving up on the house or on her career, Baker-Laporte simply redefined her professional identity. “Once I realized these things were harmful not just to me but to my clients, too, building healthy houses became a mission,” she says.

Together the two friends set out on a path that led them to a new way of thinking about where and how we live. Now, nearly a decade later, they dedicate themselves to teaching others how to make their homes into nurturing sanctuaries.

But keeping dangerous toxins out is only half the story. They also emphasize bringing in elements from the natural world that make a home feel peaceful and relaxing. Creating a home, they believe, is like practicing holistic medicine: Just as the best doctors look at the body as an integrated whole, so should we look at the dwellings that contain us.

Hidden Poisons

The quest Baker-Laporte and Elliott embarked upon a decade ago gained new urgency early this year with the publication of two perception-shattering studies. Most of us believe we can keep toxic pollutants out of our bodies if we take care of the basics–eat healthful foods, drink clean water, breathe fresh air. But when researchers from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Commonweal, and the Environmental Working Group tested that assumption by analyzing blood and urine from nine people–all environmental and health activists who thought they led “clean” lives–the results were shocking. The volunteers’ bodies carried traces of literally hundreds of chemicals: 76 linked to cancer, 94 toxic to the brain and nervous system, 86 that disrupt hormones, 79 associated with birth defects, 77 toxic to the reproductive system, and 77 toxic to the immune system. Among them were well-known poisons like PCBs, dioxin, organophosphates, lead, and mercury.

It’s not clear exactly how these low doses of multiple chemicals might affect health. While the hazards of sudden contact with large amounts of single toxins are well known, little attention has been given to long-term, low-level exposure from many sources. But Elliott has a theory about how it might work, based on her experience with patients suffering from environmental illness, which is now her specialty. One toxin builds on another, she says, increasing our sensitivity and making it harder for our bodies to process the damage. Formaldehyde, for example, triggers the immune system to react more strongly to other irritants–as Baker-Laporte experienced each day on the job.

In extreme cases, people can develop multiple chemical sensitivity, in which even minute exposure to chemicals can trigger disabling symptoms such as seizures, loss of balance, and diarrhea. More commonly, though, people find themselves plagued by garden-variety ailments like headaches, sinus congestion, asthma, allergies, fatigue, colds, and flu.

It seems that many of the invaders in our bodies gained entry years ago, the result of environmental exposures to long-banned chemicals. In a much larger study than the one by the Mount Sinai team, researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention hunted for toxins in the bodies of 2,500 people and found many old-timers, including DDE, a breakdown product of the insecticide DDT, which was banned in 1973.

On top of all the toxins we have little control over, many other contaminants come from household products we bring into our homes every day. According to the EPA, indoor air can be more polluted than the air on a busy city street. And in some areas, common household products such as cleaners and cosmetics are second only to automobiles as a source of air pollution. “We’re actually poisoning ourselves in our homes and our workplaces every day,” says Elliott.

If you’re lucky enough to be able to build a house from scratch, you can avoid many of the toxic offenders. The two friends’ first “holistic home” was the house Baker-Laporte had begun building for Elliott. They had already bought cabinets, so they used a nontoxic sealer to lock in fumes from the processed wood. Elsewhere in the house they chose untreated wood–no preservatives–and nontoxic finishes, such as paints that don’t emit volatile organic compounds. Slowly, the health-friendly building took shape: They used tiled floors in place of carpets that would trap allergens, and created an entryway where people could remove their shoes to avoid tracking in particles from the outdoors. They added a drain in the laundry room floor to guard against mold.

But here’s good news even for those of us who aren’t building a brand-new house: There’s a lot we can do, too, to reduce our exposure to toxic products. Elliott helps her patients identify–and find substitutes for–the many offenders in their homes. These days, environmentally healthy home products abound for virtually every room in the house.

Natural Serenity

A healthy home, however, requires more than just the absence of certain bad actors. In creating Elliott’s home, the doctor and Baker-Laporte also thought carefully about elements to invite inside, such as light, fresh air, and greenery. They considered how to enhance the relationship between the living space and the New Mexico landscape they loved, and how to intertwine the inside and the outside in ways that support well-being. Glass doors, for instance, open onto a beautiful garden. “Nature really is healing,” says Baker-Laporte. “A house can provide an opportunity to connect with it.”

Sarah Conn, director of the Cambridge-based Ecopsychology Institute at the Center for Psychology for Social Change, would agree. On a very basic level, she says, sunshine and fresh air are mood boosters: “People can be nourished in a way that reduces depression and anxiety.” Conn, who teaches sustainable design to architects, believes that even if you’re in a fifth-floor apartment, you can take advantage of the healing aspects of nature by bringing it indoors.

Start by focusing on air and light. If you can, throw open your windows to allow fresh air to flow through the rooms. That will help to disperse any indoor air pollutants that have built up in your home. And start collecting houseplants, which can soak up toxic gases as well as please the eye.

We also need sunlight to thrive. Indeed, we’re hardwired to respond to it. So find ways to bring more of it into a room. If a skylight is out of the question, try placing mirrors where they’ll reflect an outdoor view or a beautiful plant. “This puts you more in touch with the cycles of nature,” Baker-Laporte says. “The space becomes more alive.” Mirrors will also reflect light and make a small space feel larger, adding to the feeling of comfort and ease. Move a comfy chair closer to a window to give yourself a place to bask. (Who knows, all this might even give you a brainpower boost: In an Orange County, California school, student test scores jumped 12 percent after natural light was introduced into classrooms.)

If the views outside your windows aren’t as refreshing as you’d like, it’s easy to dress them up by planting clambering ivy or flowers outside, or in a pot inside. If a vista is truly uninviting, tape some handmade Japanese paper, which looks beautiful when illuminated, to the inside of the glass.

And don’t neglect the obvious: The busier your life, the more important it is to have at least one place in your home–whether it’s just a corner or a whole room–that’s a soothing place of respite. Bring in a tableau of natural objects that make you feel good–seashells from a favorite beach trip, say, or stones collected on a hike–and arrange them on a shelf or small table with plenty of space around them. If there’s room for a tabletop fountain, so much the better. Spending a few quiet minutes each day in a place that brings you peace can do wonders for your spirits.

Just ask Baker-Laporte, who’s infinitely happier and healthier in the all-natural home she has since built for herself. Since moving in, she says she has reaped a sense of well-being that grows stronger every year. Comparing her life now to her earlier one, she says, “It’s like night and day. You can’t feel peaceful if your body is at war with its surroundings.”

What You Can Do

For a detailed look at common sources of indoor air pollution, their health effects, and solutions, check out The Inside Story: A Guide to Indoor Air Quality. This report, from the EPA, can be found online at EPA.gov.

If you want to measure pollutant levels in your own home, contact your state or local health department for a list of companies that provide testing.

Send Toxins Packing
Perhaps one of the most important things you can do to lighten your chemical load is to dispose wisely of any toxic products you’ve collected over the years. Pull on the rubber gloves and bring the containers down to your local hazardous waste collection center. Call 1.800.CLEANUP or check www.cleanup.org for locations.

Clear the Air
It’s not something most of us give a lot of thought to, but stuffy, allergen-laden indoor air can drain both your energy and your spirits. Here are a few tips from Elliott and Baker-Laporte to help you breathe easy at home.

  • Make use of bathroom and kitchen fans to keep air moving. If your fans are so noisy that you never use them, look into replacing them: Many inexpensive new models are whisper-quiet.
  • Consider getting rid of carpets, particularly wall-to-wall types, the next time you’re redecorating. Older carpets will eventually stop emitting fumes, but even regular vacuuming won’t be able to collect all the dirt, dust, and microorganisms residing there. Tile, cork, hardwood, and bamboo are all good flooring alternatives.
  • Upgrade your vacuum cleaner to one with a HEPA (high efficiency particulate arrestance) filter, which can collect mold and dust-mite droppings and won’t belch them back into the air the way other models can.
  • Retrofit forced-air heating or cooling systems with an intake to pull in fresh air and a HEPA filter to trap pollutants.
  • Replace the filters in any air-handling system regularly; check and promptly repair any damaged flues, chimneys, or ductwork.
Green Cleaners
The quest for a squeaky-clean home can create more problems than it solves, since conventional cleaners tend to be loaded with chemicals. Luckily, many products are available in natural food stores (and sometimes even mainstream ones) that rely on natural substances to fight grime.

Sun Cross

The sun cross,The wheel cross, sun cross, Odin's cross is a cross inside a circle, is a common symbol in artefacts of Prehistoric Europe, particularly during the Neolithic to Bronze Age periods. It is the simplest conceivable representation of the union of opposed polarities in the Western world. It often stood for the sun and for the tree of life. It may be compared to the yin-yang symbol of the Eastern world.
A similar astronomical symbol represents the Earth, while the Sun is symbolized by a circle with a central dot.
Along with other ancient symbols, Pagans use the sun cross in practicing a reconstruction of ancient Celtic, Germanic and Slavic pre-Christian religion and culture.

Rod of Asclepius

The rod of Asclepius, also known as the asklepian, is an ancient symbol associated with astrology, the Greek god Asclepius and with healing. It consists of a serpent entwined around a staff. The name of the symbol derives from its early and widespread association with Asclepius, the son of Apollo, who was a practitioner of medicine in ancient Greek mythology. His attributes, the snake and the staff, sometimes depicted separately in antiquity, are combined in this symbol. The Rod of Asclepius also represents the constellation Ophiuchus, the thirteenth sign of the sidereal zodiac.
The rod of Asclepius symbolizes the healing arts by combining the serpent, which in shedding its skin is a symbol of rebirth and fertility, with the staff, a symbol of authority, befitting the god of medicine.

Maltese cross

A cross with triangular arms that taper towards the centre, sometimes having indented outer sides: formerly worn by the Knights of Malta.
The Maltese Cross is a symbol of protection and a badge of honor. Its story is hundreds of years old.
The eight points are said to symbolize the eight points of courage:Loyalty, piety, generosity, bravery, glory and honour, contempt of death, helpfulness towards the poor and the sick and respect for the church.
Its design is based on crosses used since the First Crusade. It was also the symbol of Amalfi, a small Italian republic of the 11th century.
The Maltese cross was depicted on the two mils coin in the old Maltese currency, and is now shown on the back of the one and two Euro coins. In the United States what are called Maltese Crosses are often used by fire departments.

Labarum Meaning

First adopted by the Emperor Constantine after his conversion to Christianity. It is described as a pike bearing a silk banner hanging from a crosspiece, and surmounted by a golden crown. It bore a monogram of the first two letters (CHR) of the name of Christ in its Greek form. Later, the name was given to various modifications of this standard.
As to the monogram, it was a combination of the letter X, Chi, and P, Rho, the initial syllable of Christos.

Patriarchal Cross Symbolism

The Patriarchal cross is a variant of the Christian cross.
Similar to the familiar Latin cross, the Patriarchal cross possesses a smaller crossbar placed above the main one, so that both crossbars are near the top.

Sometimes the patriarchal cross has a short, slanted crosspiece near its foot. This slanted, lower crosspiece often appears in Byzantine Greek and Eastern European iconography, as well as Eastern Orthodox churches.
The symbol, often referred to as the patriarchal cross, appeared in the Byzantine Empire in large numbers in the 9th century.

The top beam represents the plaque bearing the inscription "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews." The bottom beam may represent a balance of justice.

Valknut Symbol

Valknut is a Viking symbol of three interconnected triangles, and appears on various Germanic objects. A number of theories have been proposed for its significance.
The name Valknut is an unattested modern invention used to describe the symbol, and was not used contemporaneously when the symbol was used. The Valknut has been compared to the three-horned symbol found on the 9th century Snoldelev Stone, and may be related to it.
The word valknut is a neologism: it is formed in modern times through combination of ON valr, ‘the dead’ or ‘the slain’ and knut, ‘knot’.
The original meaning and function of the valknut is not wholly clear. The number three is a very common magic symbol in many cultures. However, in Scandinavian context three multiplied by three might designate the nine worlds, which are united by the Yggdrasil tree.

Hammer And Sickle

The hammer and sickle originate from the unique Russian unity of the peasants (the sickle) with the workers (the hammer) who together formed the Soviet Russian state.

It was the emblem of the Soviet Union, adopted in 1923 and consisting of an insignia of a hammer with its handle across the blade of a sickle and a star above.

This emblem was made during the Bolshevik Revolution. It is best known from having been incorporated into the red flag of the Soviet Union, along with the Red Star. It has also been used in other flags and emblems.

Some anthropologists have argued that the symbol, like others used in the Soviet Union, was actually a Russian Orthodox symbol that was used by the Communist Party to fill the religious needs that Communism was replacing as a new state "religion." The symbol can be seen as a permutation of the Russian Orthodox two-barred cross.

Flaming Chalice

The flaming chalice combines two archetypes - a drinking vessel and a flame - and as a religious symbol, has different meanings to different beholders.
It is the most widely used symbol of Unitarianism and the official logo of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) and other Unitarian and UU churches and societies.
The symbol had its origins in a logo designed by Austrian refugee Hans Deutsch for the Unitarian Service Committee (USC) during World War II.
The chalice symbol is often shown surrounded by two linked rings.
Many Unitarian Universalist and Unitarian congregations feature flaming chalice symbolism on their signs, logos, and in their meeting places. Some congregations light a chalice while saying opening words at the beginning of weekly worship services.

Eye of Providence

The Eye of Providence, also known as all-seeing eye, is a symbol showing an eye often surrounded by rays of light or a glory and usually enclosed by a triangle. It is sometimes interpreted as representing the eye of God watching over humankind.

In the modern era, the most notable depiction of the eye is the reverse of the Great Seal of the United States, which appears on that nation's One Dollar bill.

The Pyramid and the All-Seeing Eye on the American dollar bill are the ultimate “conspiracy theory” symbol. And there’s a good reason for that. They reveal at the same time who the conspirators are, where they’re from and where they want to go. The fact that the Great Seal is an occult and Masonic is a fact, proven by the writings of the Founding Fathers themselves and masonic documentation.

Cross Of St. Peter

Peter is believed to have been crucified upside down at his own request, as he did not feel worthy to die the same way as Jesus. Therefore many Christian sects use this cross as a symbol of humility.

The Cross of St. Peter (Petrine Cross or Peter's Cross) is an inverted Latin cross traditionally used as a Christian symbol, but in recent times also used widely and incorrectly as an anti-Christ symbol, a common but popular misconception. The correct symbolism for the anti-Christ is a inverted crucifix with Jesus Christ hung inverted upon the crucifix.

It is often associated with Satanism and anti-religious attitudes, as it is considered to represent the opposite of Christianity by inverting its primary symbol, the Latin Cross.

Cross And Crown

The Cross and Crown is a traditional Christian symbol, appears in many churches , that has aswell been used in heraldry. It is generally interpreted as symbolizing reward in heaven (the crown) coming after the trials in this life (the cross).
The attribute appears in the seal of the Church of Christ, Scientist, where it is surrounded by the words "Heal the Sick, Cleanse the Lepers, Raise the Dead, Cast Out Demons", from the Gospel of Matthew, 10:8. In this attribute the crown stands for victory over death.

The Color of Zebras

I never get tired of photographing zebras because of the stripped effect in the single animal or the patterns created when in groups. No two zebras are alike, when one look at a group of adult female impalas, they have the same color pattern and telling one from the other is almost impossible.

Why are they stripped? The story is that it camouflage that make them hard to be seen by predators in the tall grasslands. Lions are color blind so the pattern that they will see may blend with such background. I am sure that to other zebras, the stripes are just like the bar codes, to identify who they are.

Zebras are always nervous and react to the smallest movement or noise and in unison run away. If they were humans, all would be in Valium or other type of tranquilizer, the stress of being prey must be immense.

The story goes that zebras and wildebeests (also know as Gnus) migrate together for protection. Allegedly, the former have very keen eyesight and the later excellent hearing, so if one fails to see the predator, the other can hear them. Others stipulate that one has better noses than the other to pick the predators scents. I do not think these stories are fact. Regardless, they both end up as meals for lions, leopards, hyenas and crocodiles. These animals are too big for cheetahs although they can easily take down young ones.

Observing zebra groups is very interesting and it does not take long to realize that there is a leader. He is always looking after the group and moving around making sure that they stay together. The leader have 2 or 3 assistants to keep his harem together and these can be seen in the middle or trailing at the end making sure that none stays behind. When group members stray, the leader starts barking and if not obeyed, he chases the offender back into the group. But when there is a predator a chase, his bravado stops and he runs for his “wild ass.”

Young males spend lots of time measuring each other strengths by having chases and battles where they bite and kick each other. These practices will serve them well when
fighting for dominance over a harem. The kicks are very powerful and are a main defense against predators; if a lion gets kicked in the face and the jaw is broken, his hunting days are over.

Magnetic electricity

Researchers have discovered a magnetic equivalent to electricity: single magnetic charges that can behave and interact like electrical ones.

The work is the first to make use of the magnetic monopoles that exist in special crystals known as spin ice.

Writing in Nature journal, a team showed that monopoles gather to form a "magnetic current" like electricity.

The phenomenon, dubbed "magnetricity", could be used in magnetic storage or in computing.

Magnetic monopoles were first predicted to exist over a century ago, as a perfect analogue to electric charges.

Although there are protons and electrons with net positive and negative electric charges, there were no particles in existence which carry magnetic charges. Rather, every magnet has a "north" and "south" pole.

Current event

In September this year, two research groups independently reported the existence of monopoles - "particles" which carry an overall magnetic charge. But they exist only in the spin ice crystals.

These crystals are made up of pyramids of charged atoms, or ions, arranged in such a way that when cooled to exceptionally low temperatures, the materials show tiny, discrete packets of magnetic charge.

Now one of those teams has gone on to show that these "quasi-particles" of magnetic charge can move together, forming a magnetic current just like the electric current formed by moving electrons.

They did so by using sub-atomic particles called muons, created at the Science and Technology Facilities Council's (STFC) ISIS neutron and muon source near Oxford.

The muons decay millionths of a second after their production into other sub-atomic particles. But the direction in which these resulting particles fly off is an indicator of the magnetic field in a tiny region around the muons.

The team, led by Stephen Bramwell, from the London Centre for Nanotechnology, implanted these muons into spin ice to demonstrate how the magnetic monopoles moved around.

They showed that when the spin ice was placed in a magnetic field, the monopoles piled up on one side - just like electrons would pile up when placed in an electric field.

Professor Bramwell told BBC News that the development is unlikely to catch on as a means of providing energy, not least because the particles travel only inside spin ices.

"We're not going to be seeing a magnetic light bulb or anything like that," he said.

But by engineering different spin ice materials to modify the ways monopoles move through them, the materials might in future be used in "magnetic memory" storage devices or in spintronics - a field which could boost future computing power.

Photo Safari: What worked?

African safaris are the most trying environments for photographic equipment. Being in a safari vehicle is rough for the equipment and photographer due to road conditions. Whenever the vehicle is moving, I put my gear on a bean bag on the floor to stabilize it in place, put a plastic bag over the hood to keep dust off the front lens, and then a cloth over to give some protection from the sun and road dust. I carried two camera bodies with two mounted lenses and never change them to avoid dust inside the camera body or lens. No a problem for me opening the card slot in the camera since I used 16 and 32 GB cards which give me a whole day of shooting.
Where I went wrong this year? First, I did not bring enough digital storage for downloading the cards. I download nightly so I can have clean formatted cards for the next day. I carried two 120 GB and one 160 GB digital storage units, the type where one insert the card directly into the unit and the files are transferred automatically. I did run out of storage space 5 days before the safari was over. Fortunately, I had a 500 GB Passport portable hard drive available but no computer. Thanks to the kindness of one of my photo pals, who allowed me to use his notebook, I was able to download my storage units into the 500 GB hard drive. I do not carry a computer to minimize equipment weight and airport inspections. Next time I will take bigger capacity image storage units and maybe a mini computer. I arrived home with 246 GBs of images or 10,734 images; 60-70 % were lost mostly to out focus problems…a Canon tradition.

My second error was not bringing a 500 mm lens. I have carried one in the past but decided to just carry a 100-400 mm IS and 300 mm f2.8 IS with a 1.4X extender to minimize weight. I estimated that a 300 mm with the 1.4X will give me enough reach when used with a full size sensor Canon 5D MKII; this would allow for me to crop without much image quality loss--WRONG. I also used this combination with a 1.6X sensor Canon 50D camera that gave the reach, but the quality of the images I found not to my liking; the colors were harsh and images noisy. The 100-400 mm IS lens is the best compromise since it is easy to handhold and the push-pull zoom is faster than a ring driven zoom. I did also carry a 70-200 f 2.8 which never used and a 24-105 IS used just for a few landscape images.

Oh, and remember to choose your companions carefully.

Birds of Amboseli

Since most birdwatchers go out in the morning in search of their feathered treasures, no better way than to start with a sunrise. For those who has stayed at the Amboseli Serena this is a familiar tree.
The Common Squacco Heron is abundant but shy to photograph and this is the first time I was able to get a decent image. It may be in the open when first approached but usually flies away or hide behind a bush. When breeding it has a solid black bill, this one has a partial black bill which means it is not breeding or an immature one.
This is a fabulous looking bird, the African Spoonbill has a peculiar bill and it is mainly a filter feeder. Spoonbills are found in other parts of the world. The Eurasian Spoon bill may be also seen i n Kenya. Here in the USA with have a Roseate Spoonbill that is commonly seen Florida, other than the colors, it looks the same.
The Grassland Pipit is fairly common and has the habit of perching on a rock singing to attract females. It usually has a favorite rock that he paints white with its dropping. Not difficult to photograph.
Would you believe this a starling, a Superb Starling at that. Here in the USA we have the European Starling introduced in Central Park, NYC back in the 1890's. From there they spread all over the continent. Whoever did that had poor taste or was not familiar of this one...a much better looking bird. As his cousin, is usually found in large groups and is a steal to photograph...just pretend you are throwing food into the air and they will come for the feast.
I found this bird very unusual for being so black with red eyes and a yellow bill, a Black Crake. It moves over the floating vegetation easily and mainly feeds in insects. This bird is not shy and by just seating in one place and waiting, it will not be long before they can fill the frame with a 300 mm lens.
This is another smallish bird that is easy to photograph, it walks at the edge of the water looking for insect, so when I saw one walking my way, I stopped the vehicle and wait for it to come by, so close that a times the lens was not able to focus. And it has a peculiar name, the Kittlitz's Plover.
This is a favorite of photographers, the Little Bee Eater and as the name implies it feeds mainly in bees. The bird is fairly common in East Africa from the savannas to the highlands. Most colorful and seldom seen alone.
A Crowned Lapwing, very common and is really a nasty bird. I will tell you why in a narrative below. It has a very peculiar call easy to identify.
The African Jacana is one of my favorite birds, the combination of blue frontal plate, white and black head colors is unique, its long toes allows for it to walk in the vegetation floating in the water. This peculiar one had a family of 5 chicks. When I firs saw it was seating on the ground, suddenly it stood up and opened the wings and all the little ones dropped to the ground and started feeding. I observed this family for quite a while but suddenly a pair of Crowned Lapwing flew in and attacked the chicks...none survive. Why the did this? It was not because food so I assume it was to eliminate habitat competition.
So let me bore you with another image of this neat bird.
